Neighborhood residents serve a critical role in reaching the hardest-to-reach families. We have established and sustained a core team of informal neighborhood leaders who serve as Block Captains (BCs). These BCs are community change agents whom we employ and train to identify, engage, and develop relationships with families on their doorsteps. On regular walks, they identify and engage with families, providing them resources and services in response to their expressed needs and hopes.

Importantly, in addition to providing resources, BCs create and sustain trusted, valued relationships with families who typically do not walk through the doors of service agencies.  BCs approach families from a place of empathy and create lasting connections contributing to a growing network of activated families. These trusted neighbor-to-neighbor relationships underlie the transformative power of Healthy Homes and set our program apart from other wrap-around programs.
